Welcome
Second Life is a virtual world created in 2003 and built entirely by its users. The user, represented in Second Life by an avatar, can buy land in this virtual world, build on their land and hold whatever events or functions they choose there. Over the last few years, many colleges have incorporated Second Life into their teaching methodology, creating virtual classrooms and virtual venues for academic field study. This fall semester, Western Carolina University will see Second Life in the classrooms of Laura Cruz and Masafumi Takeda, as well as in several sections of the Criminal Justice department. The growing popularity of this program has sparked great debate among educators regarding its benefits to academia and its dangers.
